Artist Statement
Clio Smith is a fine artist and creative entrepreneur who balances her artistic practice with cultural exploration and entrepreneurship. She creates oil and acrylic still life compositions, drawing inspiration from the quotidian details of interior spaces. Within this framework of the mundane, she studies the manner of how people of varied cultures live and integrate these differences into her work. She focuses on Germany, Japan, and Brazil, where she has spent significant time living and working throughout my career. Ultimately, her work seeks to explore how personal and cultural identity are expressed in domestic spaces. Clio is informed by her own multicultural upbringing speaking different languages and living in different countries, and she is eager to learn and paint about people's domestic spaces around the globe. Her art exemplifies her experiences with different cultural environments as she shows the beauty in these home spaces.

Clio draws inspiration from family heritage and cultural history to create portraits using oil paint and charcoal. She incorporates symbolic elements and references family and individual photographs, weaving a person’s life stories and personality into the piece of art and transforming each portrait into a personal narrative.

Ange, my Inspirational Grandma
Acrylic, 16x22
I often paint paths to reflect my nostalgia for the outdoors and
my excitement for future adventures.
My works emphasize the mental
and physical exploration of the beautiful journey into nature. Paths intrigue me because I am curious about what could exist at the ends of these roads. While I recognize there may be another scenic view or tangible milestone I can look forward to, I am also excited by the unpredicted benefits that come at the end of any journey or ambition I create for myself.
Oftentimes, my explorations in nature often bring an
unexpected reflection and reset that motivate and inspire me even when the journey has ended and I’ve returned to my day-to-day urban life. Paths, therefore, symbolize both a mental and physical journey that I’m inclined to run, hike, bike, or simply embark on.
